How We Rebuilt a Hawaii Tech Site for Speed and Security

We rebuilt a local Hawaii tech company's website from scratch on Cloudflare Pages and R2, replacing a sluggish WordPress setup with a fast, secure modern stack.

When a Good Business Has a Website That's Holding It Back

The client was a technology consulting firm based in Hawaii. Their services were solid, their reputation was good, and their team knew their stuff. But their website told a different story. It was slow to load, hard to update, and sitting on a WordPress installation that had accumulated years of plugin debt and unpatched vulnerabilities.

First impressions matter on the web, especially in a market like Oahu where potential clients are often choosing between a handful of local providers. A sluggish website can cost you the job before you ever get a chance to pitch it.

What We Were Working With

When we did our initial audit, the problems were familiar. The WordPress site was running several plugins that hadn't been updated in over a year. Page load times were well above three seconds on mobile, and the hosting setup wasn't doing the site any favors. The design itself was built on a generic theme with heavy customizations layered on top, making it brittle and difficult to change without something breaking.

There was also no clear admin workflow for managing content. Updating service descriptions or adding new team members meant either wrestling with the block editor or calling in a developer every time. For a tech-forward company, that was a frustrating irony.

The Decision to Leave WordPress Behind

We've seen this pattern with a lot of small business websites in Hawaii. WordPress works fine when it's actively maintained, but the moment routine updates get deprioritized, the risk profile goes up fast. Unpatched plugins are one of the most common entry points for site compromises, and a compromised website can tank your search rankings and damage customer trust overnight.

Rather than patching and propping up the existing setup, we recommended a full rebuild on a modern serverless architecture. No more plugin juggling. No more database vulnerabilities to babysit. Just a clean, fast site built for how the web works now.

Our Approach: Cloudflare Pages, Workers, and R2

We rebuilt the site from scratch on Cloudflare Pages, which serves the site as a statically generated build deployed globally across Cloudflare's edge network. For a Hawaii-based business with clients across the islands and potentially the mainland, that means fast load times regardless of where someone is accessing the site from.

The bigger challenge was the backend. The client needed a way to manage their own content without relying on a developer for every small change. We built a custom admin interface that gives them a straightforward dashboard to update pages, manage service listings, and add new content. No WordPress login, no plugin conflicts, no third-party CMS subscription.

On the storage side, we used Cloudflare R2 to handle media and asset storage. R2 integrates cleanly with the rest of the Cloudflare stack and eliminates the egress fees that come with traditional cloud storage providers. For a small business keeping an eye on operating costs, that's a meaningful difference over time.

Cloudflare Workers handled the logic layer, processing form submissions, routing API requests from the admin interface, and keeping everything moving without needing a traditional server in the loop. The result is a stack where there's no origin server to go down, no PHP runtime to exploit, and no database exposed to the open internet.

The Results After Launch

The performance improvement was significant. Mobile load times dropped from over three seconds to under one second on repeat visits, and first contentful paint scores improved dramatically. The site now scores in the green across Core Web Vitals, which matters not just for user experience but for local SEO rankings in Hawaii.

The new design also gave the business a visual identity that actually matched the quality of their work. Clean layout, clear service descriptions, fast navigation, and a contact flow that doesn't frustrate users on mobile. A Honolulu-based visitor landing on a well-designed, fast-loading website reads as professional and credible in a way that a dated WordPress theme simply cannot.

The custom admin interface was the piece the client appreciated most. Their team can now log in, make changes, and publish updates without filing a support request or waiting on a developer. That kind of operational independence is something a lot of small business owners in Hawaii don't realize they can have.

What This Kind of Project Looks Like for Your Business

Every site rebuild is different, but the underlying problems tend to rhyme. If your current website is slow, hard to update, or running on an aging WordPress setup, the fix isn't always more plugins or a new theme. Sometimes the most efficient path forward is a clean rebuild on a stack that was designed for reliability and speed from the ground up.

We work with businesses across Oahu, from Ewa Beach and Kapolei on the west side to Kailua, Kaneohe, and Honolulu on the east. Whether you need a fresh design, a WordPress conversion, or a custom solution with a backend your team can actually manage, we're here to talk through your options.
